A number bond is a friendship between parts and a whole. Bond Builders makes those friendships visible as colorful bridges: connect 3 and 7 when the whole is 10, or 4 and 6, or 1 and 9. Children drag matching pairs until every bridge locks. The quiet revelation is flexibility—ten is not only “five and five.” Many roads lead to the same total.
That flexibility is rocket fuel for mental math. Tips for parents and teachers
Ask for a second pair that makes the same whole after a success: “You found 2 and 8. What is another way?” Generating alternatives builds flexible thinking. Use ten-frames on paper beside the screen so the digital bridge has a physical twin.
In guided groups, challenge students to race for uniqueness rather than speed—how many different bonds can the table list for 12? Record them on a poster. Celebrate the child who notices that 0 and the whole also form a valid (if sneaky) bond; that observation shows deep understanding of identity.
Common mistakes to watch for
Adding the two parts incorrectly and forcing a bridge anyway reveals weak verification habits. Some learners always pick neighboring numbers on screen without calculating. Others freeze when the whole is odd, forgetting that parts need not be equal.
Watch for “ten-only thinking” that collapses when the whole becomes 14. Explicitly say, “Same idea, bigger house.” If a child writes bonds as addition sentences that do not match the whole, pause the game and rebuild with counters until the parts physically create the total.

Snap interlocking cubes into a stick of ten, then break it into two towers in as many ways as possible. Photograph each break for a “bond book.” Play a card game: flip two cards and ask whether they bond to ten.
